Art

Madrid is home to three world class museums, as well as many smaller independent galleries. A visit to Madrid is not complete without exploring the 'golden triangle' of the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen-Bornemisza.

The Museo del Prado is home to the Spanish national collection of art from the 14th to the 19th century. It holds works from Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Goya, Hieronymous Bosch, El Greco, Rubens, Raphael, Boticelli and Rembrandt and more.

The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte de Reina Sofía is the country's national gallery of 20th century art. The collection includes many of Picasso's and Dalí's works along with Miró, Chillida and Tàpies. One of the most controversial single works is also within the Reina Sofía - Guernica, by Picasso.

The Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza was born when a personal collection was bought by the Spanish government in the interest of the people. It covers a wide range, in both eras and style, of primarily European paintings including Holbein, Rubens, Rembrandt, Titian, Monet, Renoir, Picasso and Mondrian.
